Jaraysi · Published October 26, 2026

How many Uber crashes per year? No single published total counts every Uber crash in a year. Several sources report on these crashes, but each counts something different, so their numbers don’t add up to one figure. Here’s how to read them, and what they mean if you were hurt.

Short Answer: Why There Is No Single Yearly Number

Figures about Uber crashes come from several sources, and each one measures something different. Some count trips. Others count miles, reported crashes, injuries, or deaths. A figure may also cover one year, several years, or one city.

Before you compare two numbers, check three things: what was counted, what time period it covers, and whether it is a raw count or a rate. A bigger raw number doesn’t always mean higher risk. It may simply reflect more trips taken.

The sections below explain where the figures come from, why they differ, how Uber and Lyft numbers compare, what Georgia data shows, and what a crash count can’t tell you about your own case.

If you or someone you love was hurt in an Uber crash, our team is glad to talk through what happened, starting with a free first consultation. Because the data comes from the company, it reflects what Uber chose to measure and report. Read it as company-reported data, not as an independent count. You can review the Uber U.S. safety report directly.

Public crash data comes from a different place. Police write crash reports, and state and federal agencies compile them. In Georgia, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety publishes traffic crash and fatality statistics, including the share of fatal crashes that were alcohol-related. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that Georgia recorded 1,403 motor-vehicle crash deaths in 2024, a rate of 12.5 deaths per 100,000 people. Those numbers cover all vehicles, not rideshare trips alone.

Academic research adds a third view. A 2016 peer-reviewed study, Uber and metropolitan fatalities study by N. Brazil, examined Uber and traffic fatalities in U.S. metropolitan areas. Researchers use their own methods and time frames. The study describes its own data and period, so it is not a current annual count.

Why Published Counts Differ From Each Other

Definitions do most of the work. A crash with any contact is a different count from a crash that caused an injury, and both differ from a crash that caused a death. A source that counts every contact incident will show a much larger total than one that counts only serious injuries, even for the same roads and the same year.

Rates change the picture too. A per-trip rate divides crashes by trips. A per-mile rate divides them by miles driven. A raw count only tells you how many crashes happened. If a platform makes more trips, its raw count can rise even when its rate stays the same. That is why a larger number on its own doesn’t show a higher risk.

Reporting matters as well. Company reports capture incidents the company logs. Police reports capture crashes an officer responds to or that a driver reports. Insurance claims capture crashes that lead to a claim. Each source sees a different share of what happened. Some minor crashes are never reported to anyone, so they never appear in any count.

How Uber and Lyft Figures Compare

Comparing Uber and Lyft requires the same definitions, the same time period, and the same measure. Published figures often miss at least one of those three. A count from one company’s report may use a different incident category than a count from a state crash file.

Market share also affects raw totals. In a city where one platform completes more trips, that platform will usually show more crashes in raw numbers, even if its rate is similar or lower. Rate comparisons need trip or mile data from both sides, and that data is often not published in a matching form.

Read alone, a raw count can’t show that one company is safer than the other. Any ranking built only on raw counts would skip the most important information, which is the rate. The figures above describe what each source counts. They don’t settle which company is safer.

Rideshare Crashes in Georgia and Metro Atlanta

Georgia law defines a ride share driver as a person who uses a personal passenger car to provide transportation arranged through a ride share network service. O.C.G.A. § 40-1-190 sets out those definitions. Public crash records don’t always show whether the driver was logged into an app at the time of a crash.

Metro Atlanta traffic runs through many jurisdictions. Trips that start or end in Duluth, Lawrenceville, or Norcross can cross Gwinnett County roads, city limits, and interstates. A crash in one of those places may be written up by a different agency than a crash a few miles away. Keep that in mind when you search local records.

For more local context, see our Georgia rideshare accident guide, our Atlanta rideshare accident guide, and our Lawrenceville rideshare accident guide.

What a Crash Count Does Not Tell You About Your Own Case

A yearly total doesn’t decide who was at fault in your crash. Georgia reduces damages in proportion to the injured person’s share of fault, and it bars recovery at 50 percent or more (O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33). Fault depends on the facts of your crash and the evidence, and how those facts fit Georgia negligence law.

Insurance can turn on the app timeline. Georgia law allows a personal auto insurer to exclude coverage while a driver is logged on to a transportation network company’s network or providing its services (O.C.G.A. § 33-1-24). The same statute requires the company to give trip timing to the driver’s personal insurer within 15 days of a request. The app status and the stage of the trip can change which coverage applies.

Filing time matters. Georgia generally requires a personal injury lawsuit within two years after the right of action accrues, except that actions for injuries to the person involving loss of consortium must be brought within four years after the right of action accrues (O.C.G.A. § 9-3-33).

Early steps help keep records together. Get medical care, write down the police report number, photograph the scene and vehicles, and save the app trip details and driver information. Georgia requires ride share drivers to keep digital identification on their smartphone while active on a ride share network service’s digital network, showing their name, photo, vehicle make and model, license plate number, certificates of insurance, and such other information as may be required by the Department of Public Safety (O.C.G.A. § 40-1-193).

Not sure what your next step is?

Talk it through with our team — the first consultation is free, confidential, and carries no obligation.

Get a free consultation

Get a free consultation

Who Can Help You Understand Your Rideshare Crash

Slam Dunk Attorney is a personal injury firm based in Duluth, Georgia.
